Effects on Instagram are visual changes or overlays applied to photos and videos, including interactive face filters and transformations generated by Meta AI123. Creators can choose ready-made effects, describe changes to Meta AI in words, or refine an AI preset with further written instructions24. The article’s patent evidence describes personalized effect discovery, not a demonstrated benefit to creators’ reach, and does not confirm how Instagram currently selects effects5. Instagram’s September 2026 Reels guide says creators can preview and save effects and apply them to individual clips rather than an entire reel, controlling which parts of the video change1.
Visual overlays and interactive effects
Instagram’s interactive effects can respond to a person’s movements rather than simply place a fixed decoration on an image36. One sunglasses filter let people tilt their heads or tap to change glasses, then move their heads to explore scenery reflected in the lenses3. A rainbow-light filter offered a different kind of interaction: tapping changed the rainbow’s orientation or moved it across the screen7. Effects have also supported cultural storytelling, including camera effects inspired by African mud cloth patterns and themes of family, bravery and good fortune8. Meta’s Newsroom described Group Effects on Instagram and Messenger video calls as shared digital experiences, including a version of the game Heads Up!9. Mosseri has also described text effects and animations as tools for making expression on Instagram more flexible10.
Applying effects in Reels and Edits
Instagram’s Reels effects browser organizes options into categories such as trending, appearance, world and funny1. Tapping an effect previews it, and the bookmark icon saves it for later use1. Reels effects have included options called 3D lyrics, dynamic lyrics and super beat, which Mosseri highlighted among its creative tools11. In Edits, Mosseri described effects that can target specific subjects, allowing a more selective treatment within a video12. He also demonstrated the Tag effect as a way to add another visual layer of detail13.
Restyling photos and videos with AI
Instagram describes its Meta AI photo effects as edits informed by the original image’s lighting, composition and subject2. Examples include Night Flash and Disposable for lighting changes, Puffer and Paper Doll for different looks, and IG Charms for turning an Instagram profile into a personalized keychain2. Instagram’s Restyle examples include watercolor and film-noir treatments, and creators can refine an applied preset with additional written instructions4. For short videos, its examples include changing outfits and backgrounds, creating an underwater setting, or adding flames or snow4. Meta’s Newsroom also described Diwali-themed Restyle effects for photos and videos in Instagram Stories and for videos in Edits14.

Personalized effect discovery and ranking
Meta research and patents. These may not describe how Instagram works today.
Meta patents describe proposed systems for choosing which effects to show people, not confirmation of Instagram’s current implementation5181920. Several Meta patents describe ordering a selection of effects using characteristics of the person and their device, with the aim of making suitable options easier to find while creating a photo or video181920. A Meta patent about video conversations describes predicting whether someone will select or interact with a graphic, and using their interests or social connections to filter or order masks, props and backgrounds5.
