Instagram Subscriptions
Contents
Instagram Subscriptions lets creators charge followers a monthly fee for exclusive content and benefits, providing recurring income.12 Creators choose the price, offer subscriptions through a Subscribe button on their profile and share subscriber-only posts, Reels, Stories, live broadcasts and channels.2 In June 2024, Instagram head Adam Mosseri explained that, when subscriptions work, their income is more predictable and less dependent on fluctuations in how many people see a creator’s content.3 Instagram for Creators’ April 2024 guidance recommends offering a clear area of value, sharing exclusive content regularly and using subscriber feedback to shape future content.4 A June 2024 discussion between Mosseri and comedy creator @LonnieIIV emphasized considering what value a creator consistently delivers in return for regular payments.3
Monthly income and creator fit
Instagram Subscriptions suits creators with a dedicated group of followers willing to pay, rather than everyone with an audience.5 In March 2024, Mosseri estimated that subscriptions might work for only about one in twenty creators.5 In June 2024, he explained that, when subscriptions work, their income is more predictable and less exposed to fluctuations in how many people see a creator’s content.3
What subscribers receive
Instagram Subscriptions supports subscriber-only posts, Reels, Stories and live broadcasts, including interactive stickers within exclusive Stories.26 New exclusive Stories are automatically saved in highlights that only subscribers can see, giving paying followers another opportunity to view them.2 Subscriber-only broadcast channels let creators share updates, while subscriber-only social channels or chats let subscribers participate in discussions.12 Subscriber badges help creators identify paying supporters.1
Building an exclusive offer worth paying for
Instagram Subscriptions benefits from a clearly defined subject or area of expertise that followers consider worth a monthly payment, according to Instagram for Creators’ April 2024 guidance.4 That guidance recommends regularly sharing exclusive content and gathering feedback through comments, direct messages, Stories and live broadcasts to shape future content around subscribers’ requests.4 Instagram for Creators illustrated educational value through hair salon owner Kimberley Haberley’s tutorials for other hairdressers, and fitness guidance through Maddison Noel’s response to followers asking for workout programs and wellness advice.78 Its profile of Indonesian footballers highlighted behind-the-scenes access and a more personal view of their lives as another approach.9 In Instagram for Creators’ interview with Lulu, she described balancing engaging public content with extra detail for subscribers, so both audiences received something worthwhile.10
Subscriber promotion and retention
Instagram Subscriptions can be promoted through Story previews of paid content paired with the Subscribe sticker, as Instagram for Creators recommended in February 2024.1 Meta’s Newsroom also described Subscribe buttons appearing alongside creators’ content in Feed and tools for welcoming new subscribers through direct messages and Stories.11 To maintain engagement, Instagram for Creators recommends interacting with subscribers through messages and comments and prioritizing replies to paying supporters.1 Its February 2024 checklist describes a lifetime promotion offering the next five subscribers a 50% discount and a cancellation promotion offering a free month when a subscriber tries to cancel.1 To activate these offers, open Professional Dashboard > Subscriptions > Confirm active offers > Offers.1
