Carousels
Contents
Carousels are Instagram posts containing multiple photos or videos that people swipe through together.1 Creators can apply a filter to the whole collection or edit items individually, and Mosseri said in October 2024 that carousels often reach more people than single-photo posts.12 In January 2025, Mosseri advised creators seeking recommendations to people who do not follow them to avoid watermarks, add audio especially to photos and carousels, and post original content.3 Instagram for Creators said in April 2026 that accounts primarily re-uploading other people’s photo and carousel work would no longer qualify for recommendations across Instagram.4 In September 2026, Mosseri advised creators to identify why a successful idea worked before building on it, rather than simply reposting it.5
Creating and sharing a carousel
An Instagram carousel has one caption for its collection of photos and videos.1 When creating the post, creators can use the multiple-item selection icon to choose their material, then tap and hold items to change their order.1 The collection can also be reached through a shared link: Instagram’s December 2021 announcement said that linking to a public carousel on Twitter would produce an image preview with a thumbnail, which readers could click to open the Instagram post.6 Sharing directly from Instagram to Twitter would also include the post’s caption alongside that preview.6

Preparing and editing a carousel
Instagram’s carousel preparation tools include filters ranging from subtle color changes to more expressive styles, along with camera-roll previews, zoom and search to help creators select material.12 Meta’s Newsroom’s December 2025 account of Instagram trends in India described the lo-fi digital-camera aesthetic as massively prevalent in carousels and Reels.13 In October 2026, Instagram for Creators introduced a carousel editor in Edits with photos, videos, text, layouts and a cutout tool for making stickers.14 That editor allows a photo or headline to extend across slides, with controls for size, rotation and color grading to position and style the elements precisely.14 For already-published carousels, Mosseri announced in July 2026 that creators could replace audio without deleting and uploading the post again: tap the post’s three dots, choose Edit and swap the audio.15
Building stories and developing successful ideas
Carousel sequencing can give a post a clear progression, such as showing a birthday party from its setup to the guest’s arrival or presenting a cake recipe step by step.1 Mosseri highlighted a makeup carousel that showed the process before the finished result, and a travel collection assembled from Stories into a feed post.1617 His September 2026 suggestions included turning a successful Reel into a carousel or making a talking-to-camera Reel from a carousel’s subject.5 To decide what to develop, he recommended looking through comments for followers’ requests and recreating older work with new information when there is more to say.5
Reach and recommendation requirements
Carousel performance varies between creators, and Mosseri said in February 2025 that Instagram does not deliberately place photos or carousels lower in people’s feeds, although Reels tend to generate more engagement for most people.1618 Instagram for Creators says consistently sharing carousels can help creators engage their audience, which can increase how widely their content is shown.19 Mosseri explained that Instagram may show a carousel again starting on its second or third slide when someone did not swipe through it the first time.16 He also described music as a way to encourage engagement and said in October 2024 that adding it makes photos and carousels eligible to appear in the Reels tab.21720 To check whether an account meets Instagram’s requirements for recommendations, his January 2025 checklist directs creators to Account Status in their profile settings to confirm that the account is in good standing.3
