Reach
Contents
Reach on Instagram is the number of distinct accounts that see your content, including followers and people who do not follow you.123 Instagram uses separate selection processes for existing followers and potential new audiences.4 Creators can adjust their publishing choices, remove content that prevents recommendations, and appeal restrictions they believe are mistakes.56 Originality affects recommendation eligibility: Mosseri said in April 2026 that accounts mostly publishing other people’s content would no longer have their posts proactively recommended to non-followers.7
What reach measures
Instagram’s reach information supports comparisons between audience size, content displays and the audiences different posts attract.13
Accounts reached versus views
For interpreting reach, Instagram’s Help Center distinguishes Views, the number of times content was played or displayed, from its audience measure, Viewers.1 Its documented audience demographics include top countries, cities, age ranges and gender breakdowns.1 These demographics require reaching more than 100 accounts within a preset timeframe.1 The Help Center suggests trying a longer preset period, such as Last 30 days or Last 90 days, if demographics are unavailable for Last 7 days.1
Follower and non-follower breakdowns
Mosseri calls reach among existing followers “connected reach” and reach among people who do not follow the creator “unconnected reach.”2 Instagram for Creators says Accounts Reached can be divided into these audiences in Insights, with the selected timeframe changed to track trends.3 Its advice is to look for patterns among posts with greater reach, while Mosseri describes these comparisons as a way to investigate why one post or reel performs differently from another.23
How posts reach followers and non-followers
Instagram identifies Explore as one route to reach new audiences: reels that perform well can appear there, where people discover accounts and videos.8
Selection for existing followers
For follower reach, Mosseri says Instagram tries to find as many followers as possible who are interested in a particular post.4 When a follower opens Instagram, that post is considered alongside all the other posts the person could see.4 Instagram then orders those available posts according to their relevance to that individual follower.4
Finding interested people who do not follow you
Mosseri describes non-follower reach as an audition: Instagram tries to give public content seeking a wider audience an initial audience, followed by broader exposure if it performs well.4 Meta AI’s explanation of Facebook and Instagram recommendations describes matching content with people’s interests and feedback, including interests shared by other people with similar tastes.9 Related Meta patents describe identifying useful posts from unfollowed pages through their quality, topics and relationship to pages someone already follows.1011 Another Meta patent describes weighing potentially interesting content from people outside someone’s connections alongside content from their connections when arranging a feed.12
Audience response and context
For understanding reach, Mosseri says like rates matter relatively more among followers, while send rates matter relatively more among non-followers.213 He also says identical reels can receive very different reach because timing, competing content and the surrounding context change how relevant people find them and how much they interact.14
Publishing choices without a universal formula
Mosseri’s reach guidance favors experimenting with choices a creator can sustain rather than searching for one posting formula that works for everyone.15
Consistency and audience timing
To help reach new audiences, Instagram for Creators recommends publishing regularly and making reels understandable to people who do not already know the creator.5 Mosseri says suitable frequency depends on both audience appetite and the creator’s work, lifestyle and energy, with successful examples ranging from once a month to five times a day.15 He rejects a universal best posting time because audiences live in different countries and time zones, and says timing is not the most important factor in maximizing reach.16 He also says creators need not wait for a successful post to peak before publishing another: posts are assessed independently, although creators should avoid making followers feel bombarded.17
Editing tools and ineffective shortcuts
Mosseri says editing videos in another app does not reduce reach, but a big watermark displayed throughout a video can affect it; his August 2026 clarification specifically warns against other apps’ wordmarks.1819 He also says switching an account from public to private and back again will not improve reach.20 Reposting your own post may help slightly at the margins, but he says it will not meaningfully change reach and recommends replying to commenters, liking comments and interacting with people who responded instead.21
Audience preferences and personalized guidance
To help posts reach interested followers, Instagram for Creators suggests encouraging those followers to add the creator to Favorites, which places the creator’s content higher in their feeds.3 For guidance on growing an audience, Meta’s Newsroom describes Best Practices in Instagram’s professional dashboard as an in-app educational destination.22 Its Reach category explains how Instagram chooses and orders content, while its Creation category addresses publishing decisions such as posting frequency and capturing attention.22
Recommendation restrictions and appeals
Instagram for Creators said in August 2026 that profiles featuring an AI-generated person must use the AI-generated profile label or face limited reach.23 It explained that people want to know when a profile features an AI-generated person rather than a human.23
Checking restrictions and challenging mistakes
For investigating reach restrictions, Instagram’s ranking explainer directs creators to Account Status to understand why their content may not be eligible for recommendations.6 Instagram for Creators says this check covers both the account and its content, and Mosseri specifically directs creators there when challenging an incorrect originality restriction.37 Meta’s Newsroom had earlier acknowledged concerns about filtering that limits reach without transparency.24
Reach is not withheld to sell ads
Instagram explicitly rejects the claim that it suppresses reach to encourage creators to buy advertising.6 Its explanation says the better business approach is to make Instagram more engaging by increasing reach for engaging content and selling ads to others.6 It also says people should know when something makes their content less visible and should be able to challenge that decision.6

September
Mosseri warned against uploading a successful reel again, saying an identical upload would probably receive less reach because people had already seen it and it would not be seen as original content.30
What you can do
- To fine-tune posting time, check Insights for when your followers are online each day and try publishing about an hour before the peak Mosseri describes.16
- To test a new reel with non-followers first, tap Trial before sharing, then tap Next and Share.31
- When assessing a trial reel, wait a couple of hours and compare its likes, sends and watch time with other trial reels at a similar age, rather than with ordinary reels.13
- When preparing a reel’s share screen, tag relevant people and locations, which Instagram says can help it reach viewers and appear in location-based searches.8
