Content ranking
Contents
Content ranking is how Instagram decides which posts, Reels, Stories and comments a viewer sees first, based on what it predicts that person will find valuable.1234 Different parts of the app use different ranking systems, which select possible content, use information about viewers and content to predict relevance, and score results to put them in order.145 Viewers can adjust recommendation topics or reset personalization, although topic controls vary in availability and coverage, and resetting can initially make Instagram less interesting.678 Recommendations can help creators reach people who do not follow them, but reach is not fixed: timing, competition and context can cause identical Reels to receive very different audience responses and reach.49 In August 2026, Adam Mosseri said Instagram’s ranking priorities include promoting original work, content from creators, timely content and opportunities for small creators.10
From available content to a ranked list
Instagram’s content-ranking process separates the information considered, predictions made from that information and scores used to order the results.1 Its explanations also distinguish finding possible posts from the more detailed assessment that selects what a viewer will see.5 Meta’s engineering team notes that these two broad steps can themselves be divided into several smaller systems.5 Instagram for Creators and Mosseri explain that ranking uses several systems tailored to different parts of the app, rather than one universal algorithm.411
For Feed ranking, Instagram’s Help Center calls information such as a viewer’s favorites and activity on Threads “signals”: information used to make predictions.12 Meta’s Transparency Center describes gathering posts from followed accounts, removing Community Guidelines violations and using an initial, less demanding model to select approximately 700 relevant posts.1 Further models predict relevance and value, and the system calculates scores for about 500 posts to put them in order.1 Instagram’s Help Center says this ordering is reflected when someone reopens Instagram or refreshes Feed.13
How ranking differs across Instagram
Feed and Stories
Instagram’s ranking systems work with different pools of content, from followed accounts’ updates to public posts selected for discovery.314 Instagram describes Feed as a mixture of posts from followed accounts, advertisements and recommended posts, whereas the Stories system gathers non-advertising stories from accounts the viewer follows.315 For Feed recommendations, Meta’s Transparency Center says the system gathers a portion of public photos and videos that meet its quality and integrity rules, then considers interests and engagement with similar content.14 For Stories, it considers who shared a story and the viewer’s previous interactions with that person, predicts personal value and applies additional checks before ordering the stories.3
Explore and comments
For Explore ranking, Meta’s Transparency Center describes finding up to 1,500 possible photos and videos using sources including authors a viewer has engaged with and media similar to media they have engaged with, then narrowing those choices through ranking stages.16 Meta’s engineering team’s August 2023 account of Instagram Explore described final adjustments for predicted engagement, content integrity and diversity.17 Comment ranking has a different task: deciding the order of replies beneath a post rather than choosing the post itself.2 For comments, Meta’s Transparency Center says Instagram can place a viewer’s own comments, friends’ comments or pinned comments first, score other comments for factors including relevance to the post and popularity, and filter Community Guidelines violations.2
What signals mean for creators
Personal relevance and audience response
For creators, Instagram’s ranking explanations identify several kinds of evidence rather than a single engagement total.181920 Recommendations can bring creators’ content to people who do not yet follow them, helping them reach new audiences.421 Instagram’s Help Center says suggested posts draw on a viewer’s follows, likes, saves, reposts and comments, connections with similar accounts, post popularity, posting time or location, and recent interactions with the account.18 Instagram also says a prediction that someone will report a post can move it lower in that person’s Feed.15 Mosseri explained in January 2025 that likes provide more information for training ranking systems because they are more common than saves, while saves still help indicate interest.19 His August 2024 explanation gave a different reason for valuing sends: sharing something with a friend creates a social connection, whereas saving is usually an individual activity.20
Why reach is not a fixed reward
Mosseri’s explanations also distinguish audience response from deliberate penalties and acknowledge limits in how ranking works.9222324 Mosseri said in May 2026 that identical Reels can receive very different reach because timing, competition and context change how people respond; in February 2026, he also attributed weaker ranking after a long posting break to having less information about the interested audience, not an intentional penalty.922 His February 2025 explanation distinguished photos and carousels performing less well from deliberate downranking, saying Reels tend to generate more engagement.24
How viewers can shape ranking
Viewers can adjust recommendation topics through “Your Algorithm,” which Instagram’s December 2025 explainer says displays their top interests and lets them type topics they want to see more or less of.6 The explainer says changes made in Reels or Explore carry across both experiences.6 Instagram’s Help Center describes “Tune Your Algorithm” as still being tested and says its effects may include Reels, Explore and Feed depending on the viewer’s region, so availability and coverage vary.7 Viewers can start personalization over with a reset, although Mosseri warns that this can initially make Instagram less interesting.8
Ranking priorities and watermarks
Instagram’s ranking priorities include values that Mosseri says the company deliberately tries to promote, rather than a neutral ordering of everything posted.10 In August 2026, he named original work, creator content, timeliness and opportunities for small creators, while acknowledging that Instagram cannot know what is culturally relevant everywhere.10 For creators choosing production tools, Mosseri clarified in March 2025 that making content in another app does not itself cause Instagram to rank it lower.25 Practical presentation choices also matter: Mosseri said in March 2025 that a watermarked logo on posted content leads to lower ranking in feeds.25
