Multi-stage ranking is how Instagram selects and orders content in successive steps, narrowing a large pool of possibilities before deciding what to show someone123. Search, Explore and Instagram’s Reels Chaining system use different steps; Explore and Reels Chaining use less demanding computer systems to narrow the selection before further ranking1234. People influence these selections through their search words and the content they interact with, which help Instagram judge what is relevant to them123. Meta’s engineering team described a newer approach, , in May 2026 that evaluates a broader pool using richer predictions earlier in the selection process5. For creators, relevance alone does not guarantee reach: Meta’s Transparency Center explained in November 2025 that Reels Chaining removes reels that cannot be recommended or may violate before making further relevance predictions3.

How successive stages select results

Instagram Search illustrates multi-stage ranking by first collecting possible results relevant to the search words, including hashtags, places, reels, posts, profiles and audio1. It scores those results using factors such as content type, how well they match what the person is searching for, and what that person tends to interact with1. Search then narrows the selection, applies checks for and duplicate results, and orders the remaining results by score1. Explore gathers up to 1,500 photos and videos, then compares characteristics of the content with characteristics of the person viewing it to select the most promising possibilities2. The Instagram Reels Chaining system gathers possible reels, including those from followed accounts, and uses a computer system requiring less computing work to select approximately 100 based on information such as reel length, similarity to other reels and the viewer’s interactions3. Further computer systems then estimate which of those reels the person will find most relevant and valuable3.

Allocating computing effort across stages

Meta research and patents. These may not describe how Instagram works today.

Meta’s patent on multi-stage ranking describes a proposed way to allocate computing effort, rather than establishing how Instagram currently operates6. In Meta’s patent, the selection steps use computer systems that estimate how likely someone is to interact with each content item6. Meta’s patent evaluates possible adjustments to those steps and their predictions by calculating both the computing time required and a measure of the expected value of the selected content to the system6. Within a given computing-time budget, the patent’s method chooses adjustments intended to increase that expected value6.

How it has changed

  1. 2019

    November

Meta’s engineering team described on Meta’s AI blog how Explore used three rounds of ordering possible posts, reducing 500 posts to 150, then 50, and finally 25 for the first page of the Explore grid7.

  2. 2023

    August

Meta’s engineering team described Explore using two ranking stages, with a less computationally demanding first stage followed by a more precise, more demanding stage operating on the best 100 posts from the first4.

  3. 2026

    May

Meta’s engineering team described , which brought richer predictions for several kinds of user actions into the earlier content-finding step, allowing a broader pool of possible content to be evaluated before final ranking5.
