Explore is Instagram’s discovery page, showing mainly photos and videos from accounts a viewer does not follow12. Instagram ranks posts using signals such as their popularity, the viewer’s past activity and interactions with their authors to predict whether the viewer will like, save or share them234. Posts allowed on Instagram may still be excluded from Explore under its recommendation rules, and creators can use Account Status to check whether their content is eligible for recommendations to non-followers567. Viewers can shape recommendations through “Interested” and “Not interested” feedback, filters for caption words and sensitive content, and Your Algorithm controls for topics they want to see more or less of891011. For creators seeking discovery through Explore, Instagram’s September 2026 Reels guide says well-performing Reels can appear there and recommends keeping Reels high-quality to improve their chance of being recommended12.
Signals and actions behind Explore ranking
Explore ranking uses information about a post’s popularity, which Mosseri described in May 2023 as its most important group of inputs2. Instagram also considers posts a viewer has saved, shared or commented on, including their previous activity in Explore3. Previous interactions with the author provide another clue, while the number of interactions that author received in recent weeks helps Instagram find content from a wide range of people3. Instagram’s Help Center adds that Explore may include posts liked by people the viewer follows or by large numbers of people13. These inputs help predict whether someone will like, save or share a particular post—the actions Mosseri identifies as the most important predictions for Explore24.
Finding candidates and narrowing the results
Meta research and patents. These may not describe how Instagram works today.
Meta’s research and engineering accounts document Explore designs in November 2019 and August 2023, with a further technical description published by Meta’s Transparency Center in June 2026141516.
Finding posts through related accounts and media
Meta’s November 2019 research description of Explore explained how accounts a person had interacted with could lead to similar accounts and possible posts to recommend14. Meta’s research account published by its Transparency Center in June 2026 distinguishes posts from authors the viewer has engaged with from posts similar to photos and videos they have engaged with16. That Meta research account describes several methods for finding possible recommendations, rather than a single way to assemble the pool16.
Ranking candidates and adjusting the selection
Meta’s research account published by its Transparency Center in June 2026 describes an initial Explore pool of up to 1,500 photos and videos16. In that Meta research account, an early ordering stage compares information about the viewer and the media using a two-part machine-learning model, then narrows the pool toward the top 100 candidates16. Meta’s engineering team’s August 2023 account describes further ranking and final adjustments involving predicted interactions, whether content is suitable to recommend and variety in the results, rather than selecting solely for expected engagement15.
Recommendation rules and safety interventions
Explore has recommendation rules beyond the rules governing what may remain on Instagram: a post being allowed on the service does not mean Instagram will recommend it67. In July 2021, Mosseri described filtering sensitive material from Explore, including content involving drugs, firearms, sexual suggestion, misinformation, suicide or self-injury7. Meta’s Newsroom reported in December 2019 that Instagram made content from accounts repeatedly receiving false-information labels harder to find by removing it from Explore and hashtag pages17. Explore has also been used to promote information deliberately: in April 2021, Mosseri said Instagram was promoting Guides from credible sources such as UNICEF India to help people find accurate COVID-19 and vaccine information18.
What creators can check and improve
Instagram’s guidance for creators seeking Explore reach covers both account visibility and how people encounter individual posts121319.
Visibility, recommendation checks and a reach test
Instagram’s Help Center says that only approved followers can see a private account’s shared photos, videos and Reels in Search and Explore13. To check whether content is eligible—allowed to be considered—for recommendations to non-followers in places such as Explore, Instagram for Creators points to Account Status; Mosseri’s December 2022 instructions placed it under Profile, Settings, then Account520. Mosseri’s statement that Meta Verified included increased Explore reach referred specifically to a February 2023 subscription test in Australia and New Zealand, not an unrestricted promise about the service21.
Surface-specific engagement and Reel presentation
Instagram for Creators says engagement within Explore matters most for Explore itself, because different parts of Instagram have different recommendation systems19. Instagram’s September 2026 Reels guide says Reels that perform well can appear on Explore12. Mosseri explained in September 2024 that a clear Reel cover helps someone understand what they will get when tapping from Explore or a profile, but usually has only a marginal effect because most Reel reach comes from elsewhere22.
Feedback, filters and topic preferences
Explore allows viewers to give feedback from a post preview without opening the recommendation, as Mosseri demonstrated in April 202123.
Responding to posts and filtering content
Meta’s Newsroom says viewers can open an Explore post’s three-dot menu and select “Interested” or “Not interested” to respond to a recommendation8. Instagram says viewers can hide multiple Explore posts at once and that selecting “Not interested” asks Instagram to avoid similar recommendations in Reels, Search and other places too9. Instagram’s Hidden Words control accepts words, emojis or hashtags to avoid in recommendation captions, rather than requiring viewers to reject each matching post individually924. Sensitive Content Control changes how much potentially sensitive material Instagram tries to filter, making it a preference about recommendations rather than a report that a particular post breaks Instagram’s rules710.
Viewing and adjusting topic interests
Instagram says viewers can open Your Algorithm from Reels or Explore by tapping the upper-right icon showing two lines with hearts11. The page displays an AI-generated summary of topics influencing the posts and recommendations they see11. Viewers can ask for more or less of an existing interest or add a new topic, and Instagram says those choices update recommendations across Feed, Reels and Explore without separate adjustments for each11.
