Instagram Shopping is a set of tools that lets businesses and creators showcase and tag products, while people can browse, save, ask about and buy those products1234. Depending on the product, shoppers can complete a purchase through Instagram or a brand’s website2. Mosseri has described creator partnerships as a way for brands, particularly small businesses, to reach people they could not otherwise reach5. Creators can use affiliate links to tag products in Reels and earn a commission when people shop their content6. Instagram for Creators said in March 2026 that opportunities to find affiliate products from Amazon and Shopee directly inside Instagram were planned next7.
Discovering products and choosing what to explore
Instagram Shopping has treated visual inspiration as a starting point: Mosseri described shopping as browsing, rather than simply making a purchase89. Historically, Instagram Shop in Explore offered recommendations based on accounts people followed, while Mosseri said Instagram tried to personalize shopping experiences to individual interests1011. The former Shop tab brought together creator-curated collections, editorial selections and holiday recommendations; Instagram also produced gift guides built around hashtag trends and shoppable entertainment3121314. People could organize wishlist items in a personal Shopping Collection and request a notification when a limited-release product became available312.
Connecting creator content to products and earnings
Instagram Shopping connects Feed posts to specific items through product tags: when creating a Feed post, tag the brand first, then specify its product2. A person tapping the published tag can open an Instagram product-detail page to learn about the item2. Creators selling their own merchandise could add an existing shop or open a new one on their profile, with Mosseri giving examples ranging from a creator’s cosmetics line to a small band selling records and T-shirts1516. For its earlier affiliate test, Meta’s Newsroom described an “Eligible for commission” label on posts to tell shoppers that their purchases could support the creator17.
Evaluating products and completing a purchase
Instagram Shopping can connect product discovery with personal assistance: Meta’s Newsroom described tests of Shops messaging in Instagram Direct that let customers view products in a conversation, ask businesses questions and seek feedback from friends or family18. Meta’s Newsroom later introduced purchases within Instagram chats with qualified small businesses, allowing the conversation and transaction to stay together1. Instagram’s original checkout let shoppers select options such as size or color, securely saved their details after the first order and provided shipment and delivery notifications inside the app19. Instagram’s May 2022 description said purchases from some brands could use Facebook Pay and were backed by its Purchase Protection Policy20. Historical Live Shopping announcements show how demonstrations and real-time questions supported decisions: viewers could inspect pinned products, save items, add them to a cart or buy without leaving the video, sometimes with discounts that ended with the broadcast202122. For purchases through ads, Instagram’s March 2024 announcement described valid brand promotional codes being applied automatically or displayed for shoppers to copy and paste at checkout23.
