Mute

Mute is an Instagram control that lets a follower hide an account’s Posts, Stories or Notes independently without unfollowing it, so a creator’s muted updates stop appearing for that follower123. People can choose which updates to hide by opening the account’s profile, tapping Following and selecting Mute2. The account is not notified, and the person muting it can still view its profile posts, receive notifications about comments or posts they are tagged in, and unmute it to restore posts to their feed4. Separate controls let people silence message and call notifications for individual or group conversations rather than hide account updates2. In June 2025, Adam Mosseri highlighted Mute as a way for people to shape what they see when Instagram gets its predictions about their interests wrong3.

Privacy, continued access and reversing a mute
Muting does not notify the affected account, a privacy protection described by Instagram’s explainer and emphasized by Mosseri16. The person who muted the account can still visit its profile to see posts and receive notifications about comments or posts they are tagged in4. They can unmute the account to bring its posts back into their feed4.
