Private accounts
Contents
A private Instagram account lets its owner approve new followers and limits access to its content to those followers12. Its name and basic profile information can still appear in search2. Privacy is also part of Instagram’s automatic protections for teens, while creators face trade-offs involving discovery and content shared with other accounts134. Mosseri said in July 2026 that switching a public account to private and back again does not improve how many people it reaches5.
Content visibility and audience controls
Private-account protections also restrict interaction: Instagram’s Teen Accounts announcement says people who do not follow a private account cannot interact with its content1. For Stories, owners can narrow the audience further by hiding their entire Story from particular people6. This control can exclude someone even if they already follow the account6.
Recommendations and reach
Private Instagram accounts do not meet the public-account requirement for recommendations, which are suggestions of content from accounts someone does not follow3. Mosseri also lists compliance with Instagram’s Recommendation Guidelines and Community Guidelines as requirements for content to qualify for those suggestions3. In his July 2026 explanation, he warned that temporarily going private can annoy people who must follow the account to gain access, while distinguishing that tactic from having another reason to stay private5.
Collaborations with private accounts
Private Instagram accounts gained the ability to join Collabs—shared posts or reels with other accounts—in August 2023, according to Meta’s Newsroom and Mosseri47. A private account can also start its own post or reel and invite a collaborator who follows it back7. Once collaborators accept, the content reaches each collaborator’s audience and appears on each account’s profile grid7. Mosseri warned that collaborating with a public account makes the shared content public4.

Parental approval to make a Teen Account public
Private Teen Accounts are intended to help address parents’ concerns about unwanted contact11213. Mosseri described account privacy as the most important Teen Account setting in October 202512. Instagram says teens under 16 need parental approval to make these protections less restrictive, including changing an account from private to public112.
