Sensitive content
Contents
Sensitive content on Instagram is material that may be allowed on the platform but could upset some people1. Meta limits the content it recommends, while Instagram’s Sensitive Content Control lets people adjust how much potentially upsetting material they encounter23. For creators, permission to publish a post does not necessarily mean Instagram will help it reach people who do not follow them4. Meta’s Newsroom announced in June 2026 that revised 13+ teen content settings were expanding globally, with parental permission required for teens to select More Content5.
What counts as sensitive content
Instagram’s examples of sensitive content include sexually suggestive or violent posts, while Mosseri has also named firearms and drug-related material16. These examples differ from content Instagram prohibits, such as hate speech, bullying and other material that could put people at risk of harm1. Instagram explains that people have different preferences about encountering potentially upsetting posts, which is why its filtering offers different levels rather than a single experience for everyone1.
Who can still see sensitive posts
Instagram for Creators says posts that break its Recommendation Guidelines—the rules for content it suggests to people—can still be shown to followers, even when Instagram tries not to recommend them to non-followers4. Repeated violations, or a profile photo or bio that breaks those guidelines, can stop the entire account’s content from being recommended for a period of time4. Sensitive posts can also appear lower in Feed and Stories under separate safeguards covering possible bullying or hate speech, adult nudity and sexual themes, and attempts to trade certain regulated products7. In Search, Instagram may place accounts lower in results, require someone to search their full username, or provide links to verified support resources for sensitive searches8.
Choosing how much sensitive content to see
Instagram’s Sensitive Content Control offers More, Standard and Less choices, with More allowing more potentially upsetting material and Less reducing it39. The Help Center lists its coverage as Explore, Search, Reels, Comments, Accounts You Might Follow, hashtag pages and recommendations in Feed3. The control does not apply to content that goes against Instagram’s Community Standards or to content displayed with a warning3. To find it, open your profile and tap the menu in the top-right corner3. Select Content Preferences, then Sensitive content3. Choose an available setting and tap Confirm; the Help Center notes that More may not be available to people under 183.
Stricter protections for teens
Instagram places teens in its most restrictive sensitive-content setting automatically, and Mosseri has described these restrictions as part of Teen Accounts’ built-in protections101112. These protections can hide sensitive material altogether, even when an account the teen follows shares it11. Meta’s Newsroom says users under 16 need parental approval to make Teen Account settings less restrictive, and teens using the Limited Content setting cannot see or post comments513. The revised 13+ framework draws on movie-rating criteria familiar to parents, although Meta’s Newsroom acknowledges that movies and social media differ1415. In June 2026, Meta’s Newsroom said an assessment by Alice found exceptions in safeguards against interacting with accounts that regularly share age-inappropriate material; Meta updated its detection methods, and the assessment found the fixes effective when retested5. Meta’s Newsroom also reported that the rare mature content encountered during that assessment mostly involved risky stunts or viral challenges, and that car surfing was not yet covered by its policies even though subway surfing was already restricted for teens5.
