Audience controls
Contents
Audience controls are Instagram tools for choosing who can access what you share.1234 Creators can choose a smaller audience through Close Friends, exclude people from Stories, customize a Live broadcast’s audience, and choose who can see their location if they enable Map location sharing.12456 An October 2017 Meta patent describes filtering out content a viewer cannot access, ranking the remaining material by relevance, and potentially displaying only the highest-ranked items.7 This illustrates why permission to access a creator’s content need not mean it is displayed, but is a patent example rather than evidence of how Instagram currently implements audience controls.7 Adam Mosseri clarified in November 2025 that excluding someone from Stories does not block them from your other posts.3
Choosing a smaller audience
Instagram’s June 2024 announcement described sharing Reels to Close Friends on both public and private accounts; Mosseri described Close Friends in October 2020 as a list people can curate for more limited sharing.28 Instagram says people are not notified when you add or remove them from that list, so you can change its membership at any time.2 For Live broadcasts, Instagram’s July 2024 instructions place audience customization alongside the title settings, before you press “Start Live Video.”1
Excluding Story viewers and limiting location sharing
Instagram’s Story audience controls also let you exclude people rather than select recipients: Mosseri explained in June 2025 that an exclusion list prevents access to any of your Stories, even when you follow each other.5 He directed users to profile settings, then “Who can see your content” and “Stories and live,” and clarified in November 2025 that excluding someone from Stories does not block them from your other posts.35 For people who enable Map location sharing, Mosseri’s August 2025 explanation listed three audience choices: a custom list, Close Friends, or followers they follow back.4 Tagging a location in a Story is different: that Story appears on the Map for 24 hours and shows followers the tagged place, not your real-time or live location.4
Audience permission and content ordering
Meta research and patents. These may not describe how Instagram works today.
A September 2020 Meta patent describes suggesting potential viewers based on their predicted interest in a post, then letting the person posting confirm or revise that audience before sharing; it does not establish how Instagram currently implements its audience controls.9 An October 2017 Meta patent describes excluding information a viewer cannot access and ordering the remaining material by relevance to that viewer.7 In that Meta patent, interaction history can help determine relevance, and only the highest-ranked stories may be selected for display, illustrating why permission to access content need not mean it is displayed.7
