Previously viewed posts
Contents
Previously viewed posts are posts or Reels someone has already seen on Instagram.123 Meta’s Transparency Center lists how often recommended content has appeared to a viewer as an input to suggested Feed recommendations, and lists previously seen Reels and the authors of Reels watched for less than three seconds as inputs to Reels recommendations.12 For creators, these are documented recommendation inputs, not proof that prior viewing increases or decreases repeat exposure or reach.12 In Feed, Instagram’s “You’re All Caught Up” message marks when someone has seen every post from the last two days; below it are both previously viewed posts and posts older than two days.3 In October 2025, Adam Mosseri announced that people could find previously watched Reels through Settings > Your activity > Watch history.4
Viewing history and repeat appearances
Instagram’s suggested Feed recommendations use information about how many times recommended content has appeared to someone, both within Feed and after their regular Feed posts, according to Meta’s Transparency Center.1 For Reels recommendations, Meta’s Transparency Center lists the Reels someone has seen and the authors of Reels they watched for less than three seconds among the information considered.2 Meta’s Transparency Center says suggested Feed posts are ordered by their predicted value to the viewer.1 A Meta patent—not documentation of a current Instagram feature—describes choosing older posts to show again by date, topic or event, then ordering them by how likely the viewer is to interact with them.5 The Meta patent also describes displaying when a selected post was created or originally shown to the viewer.5 To limit repeat appearances, the Meta patent proposes rules such as showing an older post only once per day or once per specified number of unseen posts.5
Recognizing previously viewed content
Instagram helps people recognize previously viewed Feed content through the “You’re All Caught Up” message, which appears when they have seen every post from the last two days.3 Instagram says the area below that message contains both previously viewed posts and posts older than two days, so it is not exclusively a collection of repeats.3 A Meta patent describes another way to distinguish seen from unseen content—placing new feed stories above previously presented stories—but does not document a current Instagram feature.6
How it has changed
Finding previously viewed content
Meta research and patents. These may not describe how Instagram works today.
To return to a watched Reel, open Settings > Your activity > Watch history.4 For search, a Meta patent describes suggesting search terms from phrases in posts, rather than documenting how Instagram search currently works.7 The Meta patent matches what someone types with phrases drawn from posts they have seen or could have seen.7 The Meta patent’s examples include posts that may have appeared in someone’s feed or on a page they visited, so its proposed suggestions are not limited to confirmed views.7
