Shares on Instagram are actions that pass content to other people, such as sending a Reel in a message or putting a Feed post in a Story.12 People can choose an audience and add context to the material they share.34 Sharing helps creators assess audience response and contributes to Instagram’s decisions about which videos to show people.56 Mosseri said in August 2024 that creators assessing performance should examine views and sends per reach—sending activity relative to the number of people reached.7
Choosing where and with whom to share
Sharing photos and videos on Instagram happens most often through messaging, according to Meta’s Newsroom in September 2025.1 Instagram also describes sharing Reels with people gathered in the same room: casting from a phone to Google TV or Fire TV brings a selected video to the group’s screen, including videos chosen from the Saved tab.8 The item being shared can be an account rather than a post, with Mosseri describing profile cards as a visual, customizable way to introduce an Instagram profile.9 For a smaller intended audience, Mosseri recommends posting to Close Friends instead of pursuing maximum reach, particularly when concern about performance makes posting stressful.3
Preparing content to share in Stories
Sharing through Stories can start with your own saved material: Mosseri explains that the Story archive is private unless you choose to share something again.10 Instagram’s Instants, disappearing photos shared with friends, are also saved in an archive for up to a year and can be assembled into a Story recap.11 When the material comes from another app, such as Spotify or GoPro, it enters the Instagram camera for editing before publication to a Story or sending through a direct message.12 For a reshared Reel or Thread, Instagram recommends the text tool as a way to explain what is on your mind.4 Story links can direct people to resources, information or products, while reshareable gift-card and food-order stickers let people pass along ways to support a business.1314 For photos restyled with Meta AI, an Add Yours sticker lets friends apply the same edits to their own images and continue the activity in their Stories.15

Comparing reshares with likes, views and reach
For Instagram shares, Mosseri’s April 2024 comparison identifies reshares per photo, Reel or carousel alongside likes per post and views per Reel.5 He recommends giving these measures of response more attention than follower count, while acknowledging that accounts with more followers generally reach more people.5 When comparing sharing with viewing, his August 2024 explanation makes another distinction important: one person can view the same piece of content multiple times, so views and reach are not interchangeable.7
Predicting reshares to rank Reels
For Reels discovery, Instagram considers likely resharing alongside the likelihood that someone will watch to the end, like the video or visit its audio page, which can indicate inspiration to make a Reel.6 Most videos in this part of Instagram come from accounts the viewer does not follow, and surveys about whether a Reel was fun or worth watching help Instagram refine its choices.6 Meta’s July 2026 research examined making reshare predictions more consistent by using the same stored information about each piece of content when teaching a recommendation model and when using it to make predictions.20 Meta’s research reported that this reduced the performance gap between those stages by 35%, from 5.24% to 3.42%; the result concerns prediction consistency, not a stated increase in shares or a description of Instagram’s current ranking rules.20
Suggested recipients and personalized sharing controls
Meta research and patents. These may not describe how Instagram works today.
Meta patents address a different part of sharing from predicting a Reel’s appeal: helping someone choose a recipient or a sharing button, without establishing that Instagram offers the proposed interfaces.2122 For the recipient choice, one Meta patent proposes inbox suggestions based on who might enjoy the content and whom the sender has previously sent similar material to.21 For the sharing route, another Meta patent proposes selecting which sharing buttons an app displays using a person’s profile information, with possible cues showing share counts and which social connections shared the content.22
